Middle School STEM Leadership: Expanding Innovation and Student Impact

This session is designed for both new and returning middle school STEM Lead Teachers. Participants will deepen their understanding of STEM programming in Newport News Public Schools and how STEM leadership supports innovative, career-connected learning experiences for students. The session will highlight the Virginia STEM Ecosystem and NNPS leadership within Region 2, community STEM partnerships, NNPS STEM signature experiences, and competitive robotics opportunities that expand student engagement beyond the classroom. Participants will collaborate around updated expectations, new resources, and strategies for building strong STEM culture and interdisciplinary connections within middle school environments. Please bring a laptop or device to access digital materials during the session.

Participants will explore how STEM leadership supports innovative instruction, authentic student experiences, and future-ready pathways in Newport News Public Schools. The session will include updates on the Virginia STEM Ecosystem and NNPS leadership within Region 2, community and industry STEM partnerships, NNPS STEM signature experiences, and the continued growth of competitive robotics programming. Participants will also discuss strategies for strengthening schoolwide STEM culture, expanding student opportunities, and connecting STEM learning to workforce and postsecondary pathways. This session is intended for High School STEM Lead Teachers.

Participants will explore the “what” and “why” behind STEM programming in Newport News Public Schools and the important role STEM Leads play in supporting innovation, engagement, and student success. Topics will include the Virginia STEM Ecosystem and the leadership role of NNPS within Region 2, community STEM partnerships, NNPS STEM signature experiences, and opportunities connected to competitive robotics and engineering design challenges. Participants will also review expectations, available resources, collaboration opportunities, and practical strategies for strengthening STEM culture at their schools. This session is intended for Elementary STEM Lead Teachers.
